Thompson to Head NASA Flight Surgeons

Moriah S. Thompson, M.D., M.P.H., is the incoming President for the Society of NASA Flight Surgeons.

She earned a B.Sc. in Biomedical Engineering in 2009 at Texas A&M University in College Station, TX, an M.D. in 2014 at UT Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, TX, and an M.P.H. in 2018 at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), Galveston, TX. She served a residency in Emergency Medicine at the Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education in Rochester, MN, from 2014–2017, and an Aerospace Medicine residency at UTMB from 2017–2019. She began her career as an Exploration Systems Mission Directorate Intern at NASA Johnson Space Center, Houston, TX, in 2007 and went on to be a Student Researcher, Undergraduate Team Lead, at the Space Engineering Institute, College Station, TX, from 2005–2009, and then became a National Space Biomedical Research Institute Intern, again at NASA Johnson Space Center, in 2010, and then a Pathways Intern in 2012.
   In 2014, Dr. Thompson entered the Emergency Medicine Residency at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, and in 2015 also became Emergency Services Co-Medical Director at Zumbrota Area Ambulance, MN. She was an Aerospace Medicine Resident Physician, Chief Resident, at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) starting in 2017 and later that year became an Emergency Medicine Physician at Clear Lake Regional Medical Center, Webster, TX. From 2019–2020, she also served as an Emergency Medicine Physician, Schumacher Clinical Partners, at Clear Lake Regional Medical Center. In 2019, she took her current position as Flight Surgeon, Exploration Medical Integrated Product Team Lead, in the Space and Clinical Operations Division at NASA Johnson Space Center, Houston, TX.
   Dr. Thompson is an Associate Fellow of the Aerospace Medical Association (AsMA) and a member of the Society of NASA Flight Surgeons. Within AsMA, she is a member of the Education and Training Committee, the Nominating Committee, and the Associate Fellows Group. She is also a member of the Society of Women Engineers, where she was Executive Secretary from 2007–2008 and then President from 2008–2009 of the Texas A&M University Section. Her awards include an Outstanding Student Award from the Society of NASA Flight Surgeons, a Residency Service Award and Outstanding Resident Research Innovation award from Mayo Clinic Emergency Medicine, the Jeffrey R. Davis and Stanley R. Mohler Aerospace Medicine Endowed Scholarships from AsMA, the Julian E. Ward Award from AsMA, and an Early Career Achievement Award  from NASA.
