The Raymond F. Longacre Award is given for outstanding accomplishment in the psychological and psychiatric aspects of aerospace medicine. It is sponsored by the Aerospace Human Factors Association.

Maj. William Hoffman, USAF, MC, FS, M.D., is the 2026 winner of the Raymond F. Longacre Award for his pioneering international leadership in integrating psychological health into aviation safety management, uniting regulators, clinicians, researchers, unions, and industry across six countries to develop the first evidence-based frameworks, ethical guidance, and operational tools linking mental health to aviation risk management. His leadership resulted in the creation of the first aviation mental health job aid for aircraft accident investigation, enabling safety investigators to systematically evaluate psychological factors as potential contributors in mishaps. He also served as scientific advisor to the International Peer Assist Aviation Coalition, expanding inclusion to historically overlooked populations such as air traffic controllers and aviation engineers. Within the U.S. Air Force, he directly supported establishment of the first-ever aviation peer support program, now serving more than 80 aircrew members. His work advances the psychiatric and psychological foundations of aerospace medicine by reframing mental health not as an individual problem, but as an operational safety domain requiring structured risk management, data governance, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
