Author Instructions

These notes are provided for the convenience of authors considering preparation of a manuscript.

The full-length instructions are available on our submission site, Editorial Manager. Submissions that do not substantially conform to those instructions will be returned without review.

We conform to the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals.

Journal Mission and Scope

Aerospace Medicine and Human Performance is published monthly by the Aerospace Medical Association for the benefit of its membership and to serve and support those who explore, travel, work, or live in hazardous environments ranging from beneath the sea to the outermost reaches of space. The journal’s readership includes a diverse mix of physicians, physiologists, psychologists, nurses, engineers, and others working in aerospace medicine and related areas.

The journal publishes original articles that are subject to strict peer review as well as teaching materials for healthcare professionals. The editor will not ordinarily review for publication work that is under consideration or has been accepted or published by another journal except as an abstract or a brief preprint.

Rules for Determining Authorship

Each person designated as an author should have made substantial intellectual contributions as specified in the full Instructions to Authors on Editorial Manager.

AI Policy

Authors must specifically state in their cover letter that they have not used generative AI in the preparation of their manuscript.

ChatGPT, Large Language Models, and any other generative AI programs cannot be used as a replacement for original thought or to perform activities that would normally be the responsibility of authors (e.g., developing hypotheses, selecting and interpreting statistical tests, writing abstracts, formatting articles, etc.). ChatGPT, Large Language Models, and any other generative AI programs cannot be used to create images, multimedia, or graphic elements.

Please note that standard referencing software tools are not considered “generative AI” and, therefore, are not subject to these policies. See the full Instructions to Authors on Editorial Manager for more details.

Ethical Use of Human Subjects and Animals

The Aerospace Medical Association requires that authors adhere to specific standards for protection of human subjects and humane care and use of animals. The methods section of a manuscript must explicitly state how these standards were implemented. See the full Instructions to Authors on Editorial Manager for more details.

Reference Style

The style for references is the National Library of Medicine (NLM) format using citation-order, i.e., numbered in the order cited.

Selection and Formatting of References

The Corresponding Author is responsible for providing complete, accurate references so that a reader can locate the original material. References must be cited in numerical order in the text, tables, and figure captions; the reference list should be created after all references have been cited. If electronic references are used, they should be readily available to the reader.

Publication Procedures

Once the Editor has accepted a manuscript, the electronic source files for text and figures (TIFF, PDF, or EPS preferred) are forwarded to the publisher, the Aerospace Medical Association, for conversion to printable format and final copy-editing. Correspondence related to publication should be directed to the Managing Editor at (703) 739-2240,  ext. 101, or [email protected].

When the paper is ready for publication, the printer provides a proof (PDF file) of the typeset manuscript. The Corresponding Author will be notified by e-mail when this proof is available and is responsible for correcting any errors and responding to any “Author Queries” (AQs). Failure to return the proof within 72 hours may result in a publication delay.

Once the proof is finalized, it will be assigned to an upcoming journal issue and published online at https://asma.kglmeridian.com/. New journal issues are typically published during the first week of each month.

Types of Papers

All article types specified below should be submitted through Editorial Manager and will undergo peer review. Historical Notes, Technical Notes, Commentaries, and Letters to the Editor may be considered at the discretion of the Editor.

Research Articles

These manuscripts may address basic, applied, or clinical research. They should present the results of experimental or descriptive studies with suitable statistical analysis of results arranged into the following sections: Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion, ending with a statement of conclusions. Such manuscripts may not exceed 6000 words with approximately 25 references, 4 Tables, and 4 Figures.

Review Articles

These manuscripts are scholarly reviews (may be narrative or systematic) of the literature on important subjects within the scope of the journal. Systematic reviews should, where possible, be registered prospectively with PROSPERO or similar, and the registration number must be included in the methods. For systematic reviews, it is strongly recommended that a medical librarian be involved with the development and execution of the literature search. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses must be reported using the most recent Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines (currently the 2020 edition). It is suggested that authors considering preparation of a Review Article contact the Editor to ascertain the suitability of the topic. Reviews generally may not exceed 6000 words with up to 150 references. Longer reviews of exceptional quality and relevance may be considered.

Case Reports

These manuscripts describe interesting or unusual clinical cases or aeromedical events. They should include a short Background to provide perspective, details of the Case, and a Discussion that includes references to pertinent literature. Such manuscripts may not exceed 3000 words with approximately 12 references and a combined total of 4 Tables/Figures.

Short Communications

These manuscripts describe new techniques, devices, or interesting preliminary findings that may serve as the basis for further definitive research. They should contain the same sections as a Research Article but may not exceed 3000 words with approximately 12 references and a combined total of 4 Tables/Figures.

Historical Notes

These manuscripts are a type of Short Communication regarding past events of significance in the development of aviation and space medicine.

Technical Notes

These manuscripts are another type of Short Communication. They describe a new device or novel technique that may be promising for studying and working in aerospace and other extreme environments.

Commentaries

These manuscripts are brief essays that set forth opinions or perspectives on relevant topics. They may not exceed 1000 words with approximately 10 references, and they should contain an abstract of 150 words or less.

Letters to the Editor

These manuscripts discuss and/or criticize scientific papers that have appeared in the journal within the past year and are limited to 500 words. The author of the original paper will be invited to provide a response.

We also accept Aerospace Medicine Clinic (formerly You’re the Flight Surgeon) articles.

Language, Measurements, and Abbreviations

The language of the journal is standard American English. Authors who are not perfectly fluent in the language should have the manuscript edited by a native speaker of English before submission. Measurements of length, weight, volume, and pressure should be reported in metric units and temperatures in degrees Celsius. Abbreviations and acronyms should be used only if they improve the clarity of the document.

Preparation of Tables and Figures

Tables and figures should be used strictly to advance the argument of the paper and to assess its support. Authors should plan their tables and figures to fit either one journal column (8.5 cm), 1.5 columns (12.5 cm), or the full width of the printed page (18 cm). Tables should be assigned consecutive Roman numerals in the order of their first citation in the text. Tables should not ordinarily occupy more than 20% of the space in a journal article. Figures (graphs, photographs, and drawings) should be assigned consecutive Arabic numerals in the order of their first citation in the text. Line drawings of equipment are preferable to photographs. All graphics should be submitted at the appropriate quality: 900-1200 dpi for monochrome; 300 dpi for halftone; 600-900 dpi for combination halftones. They must be sent electronically, preferably as high-resolution TIFF, PDF, or EPS files. See the full Instructions to Authors on Editorial Manager for more details.
