Rodger Vanderbeek, M.D., MPH, is the 2026 winner of the Louis H. Bauer Founders Award for his 40+ years of dedication to aerospace medicine. From combat pilot to Air Force Chief of Aerospace Medicine and beyond, his leadership shaped operational aeromedical research, particularly at the U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine (USAFSAM). He fostered innovation in areas like casualty care, outcome-driven medical standards research, and human performance in drone operations. He spearheaded the development of Air Combat Command’s first Prioritized User-Focused Aeromedical Requirements list. This groundbreaking document, a testament to his visionary leadership, served as a roadmap for directing resources and shaping research priorities within the command. His commitment to supporting aircrews in real-world operational settings was evident in his work during Operation Desert Storm, where he conducted vital research on pilot fatigue and Gz acceleration onset/offset rates in F-16s, directly impacting the safety and effectiveness of aircrews engaged in combat operations. At USAFSAM, he spearheaded the development of a robust research department, transforming USAFSAM into a leading research institution within the Department of Defense, solidifying its reputation as a center of excellence in aerospace medicine. He also fostered partnership between USAFSAM and other research agencies. His career, a testament to the powerful synergy between clinical practice, research, and operational experience, has profoundly impacted the health and performance of countless airmen.
