The John D. Hastings Award is presented annually to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to aerospace neurology and/or cognitive science, in a single year or over a defined period, for the advancement of cognitive performance risk assessment related to flight or space operations. Joseph I. Sirven, M.D., is the 2026 winner of the John D. Hastings Award. He is recognized as a leading voice in aerospace neurology for more than two decades, bridging clinical neurology, aviation safety, and medical education. He has served the FAA as a member of the FAA Neurology summit, consultant for aerospace neurology, and speaker. Through multiple presentations and publications, he has demonstrated the same care and compassion that he has for his patients. He introduced aviation and pilot-related neurological issues to the American Academy of Neurology, helping raise awareness of aerospace neurology within the broader neurology community. He practices aerospace neurology at the Mayo Clinic, where he also teaches residents and fellows, ensuring the next generation of neurologists is equipped to address the unique challenges at the intersection of neuroscience and flight. He has made sustained and influential contributions to aerospace medicine, embodying an interdisciplinary spirit and commitment to safety.
