Joan Sullivan Garrett, the founder of MedAire, has been named a 2026 inductee into the Women in Aviation International (WAI) Pioneer Hall of Fame. She will be honored in March 2026 in Dallas, TX, United States, during the 37th Annual WAI Conference. She founded MedAire in 1985, transforming emergency medical service response in aerospace and maritime operations, and pioneered global telemedicine, later creating MedLink. As a young flight nurse, after losing a patient in the Arizona mountains, she wanted to create a system that could reach any patient, anywhere, so she trained pilots, flight crews, and operators in emergency response. She also urged leaders in the aviation field to improve safety standards. She has received a number of honors, including the National Business Aviation Association’s Meritorious Service Award, the Flight Safety Foundation’s Business Aviation Meritorious Service Award, induction into the National Aviation Hall of Fame, and the Wright Brothers Memorial Trophy.
